22.1.3 Imperative in reported speech |
Often phrases like the following are to be found in texts |
Dijo
que tomara un café con leche y que
dejara de hablar tanto. Dice que venga mañana porque entonces tendrá tiempo. |
Now you may wonder how come that there is subjuntivo
when the quoted clause does not seem to have a subjuntivo
in the original version. And the table before showed
that only when the quoted clause has a subjuntivo the
reported sentence use the subjuntivo as well. The answer
to that is found in the title of this little chapter
- the imperative. The
imperative is always changed into subjuntivo.
The system of this change is shown in the table below.
Introductory clause: presente, pretérito perfecto, futur, condicional |
Dice/Ha dicho/Dirá/Diría: "Hazlo!". |
Dice/Ha dicho/Dirá/Diría:"Venga!". |
Dice/Ha dicho/Dirá/Diría:"Toma!". |
Introductory clause: indefinido, imperfecto, plusquamperfecto |
Dijo/Decía/Había dicho:"Hazlo!" |
Dijo/Decía/Había dicho:"Venga". |
Dijo/Decía/Había dicho:"Tomalo". |
The examples from above become clear now: |
Dijo
que tomara un café con leche y que
dejara de hablar tanto. |
