The Spanish conditional can be used also then when the condition is not actually said but only in the head of the speaker.

Yo te ayudaría. = I would help you (if you asked me; if you weren't that nasty to me; if you crawl on your knees etc.) |
Another possibility is that the discussion refers to another subject or another part of the same discussion.
