The streets of Soria were then, and they still are, narrow, dark and angled. A deep silence reigned in them, a silence broken by barking dogs, or by the slam of a door, or by the neighing of a prancing horse, which made the chain, to which it was fastened at feeding trough in the subterrenean stabels, clank.
